AAA
Au/DHD and Ally ~ Access All Areas ~ Antisocial and Awkward
Actually All of the Above
A Movement of Movements
“The Inside Out Exhibition” would be staged by Inside Out, C’s collective.
If Jordan wanted to curate one, it could be another name and it would be “An AAA Exhibition by That Collective”
Sara a different one, team efforts another name again, etc.
Allows clear leadership, support can be recognised by creating a new name as Curator / Co-Curator or PA. Adaptable for what people need at any point. Plus it allows us to bring in new people in other roles before we consider them leading an AAA project.
Claire: Can offer two bed spaces. One in sewing room, on a Z Bed. One in living room on fold out sofa bed. Loads of hoarded resources for making new work.
Jordan: Knows forms & Funding
Sara: Knows forms & Funding
Curation / Happenings / Performances / Exhibitions
Inside Out Collective Presents: The Inside Out Exhibition
Example budget: £1000
I can justify this easily if I don’t have an expense like jaw botox or a trip for 3 months in a row. I can actually use a credit card for it once I’ve saved the money, and use it to keep the expenses separate so I have an “Inside out” card for my own sanity & to help prove I can financially deliver as promised for future funding bids. I have a Virgin current account I don’t use for anything, so that can become the Inside Out one within a week if I want to!
£500: Miss Lydia Photography
£250: art book production (ISBN, e.pub version available on issuu maybe? Amazon? - royalties can go into the Inside Out account if and as and when we sell copies! I can have them for sale on my site & ask DCA etc. Coin Op Distro, zine fayres etc.
£250: everyone’s travel (taxi on demand), printing expenses, people’s safe foods for the decompression support meeting afterwards.
Six people: Five artists & a support worker
CL Gamble as “Pandora” - lead curator
C’s support worker. Wednesday afternoons 2-5pm
Two 2D / placard or A board wearing artists
Two 3D / Applied Arts or crafters OR Allies
I suggest we co-curate the first. Two Autistic/ADHD artists and two allies / other ND artists they feel comfortable teaming up with. This could be the applied artist, for example embroidery, knitting or visible mending.
Aids are encouraged and discussed case by case (as the exhibition is so small, that’s doable!). This includes discussing with the venue.
As well as other accommodations such as using an Ally such as a family member to make the event accessible for you, ear defenders, supporting you with a printed leaflet or "fascinating fact about this afterwork” / conversation prompts to hand people about your work to reduce you getting burned out on interacting etc. Covered by C’s budget.
Three sets of seated people in a public space is unlikely to be an issue for settings such as City Square, gallery cafes and so on.
I would approach a variety of institutions, businesses, and request permission for an “art happening”. Risk assessed according to the positive responses.
Risks include:
Ungainly A-Boards impeding exit in an emergency. Response: A boards/placards are to be kept to A3 minimum
Multiple mobility aids in one space could impede exist during an emergency. Response: well that doesn’t sound like you expect more than one disabled person to exist in your establishment, why is that and what would you suggest? Why isn’t your lift bigger? We could remove one of the tables and lower your income for the afternoon, perhaps? Would you have agreed to this without the mobility aids? Please put your answer in writing.
Lydia’s lighting equipment. Response: if any lights are needed, bring small ones. reflectors preferred so opt for natural light venues.
Concerns over blocking sales: Response: Visitors to the exhibition will be buying their own drinks and interacting with us if they chose - we will also offer a minimum spend (TBA - within C’s budget) and agree a maximum duration, from 45 minutes to 90 feels sensible.
My invited artists:
Nicola - a finished piece, even a kit, would be a brilliant way for you to tell people about the stitching group, your involvement in the Dundee Tapestry, etc. And you are more than welcome to talk to me about anything I can do to support that! If this isn’t for you, that’s fine but I thought Sarah at the DCA might be good to approach because she supported you to deliver a workshop, so I know she is a trusted and trustworthy person & open minded.
Lindsay H - Would you two be a good team for buddying up and being Allies for each other? Applied arts are often considered ‘outside’ of conceptual fine art but I will be wearing my hoodie and talking about textiles in archaeology. That could be a good incentive for people to move around the three seated presentations.
Suggestions…
Elly Platt - Thames Jacket / Egret Dress etc (would need more planning time, she’s busy)
Jordan - large version of your prints?
Sara - you could either bring something or be an ally discussing your PhD beside your chosen artist…
Potentially two more - open to pitches and ideas of others, or we could keep it very simple with only 4 of us, which would be even easier and have a lower budget (more food or fancier printing!!)
Performance / Exhibition:
A Wednesday Afternoon, between 2-5pm
CL Gamble as Pandora - Wearing my Artistic Anarchy hoodie. A3 Placard.
C’s support worker. Probably Lisa, sound as a pound.
Second Artist and And/or Ally
Locations to approach: DCA Cafe Bar (Could Nicola ask Sarah?)
Press release with “Artistic Anarchy! A pop up exhibition in the DCA’s Jute Cafe-bar. Local art collective inside out present an exhibition which destroys the barriers between art and audience. By bringing the exhibition into the cafe gallery space, curator Pandora Sterling-Morgan explains: ‘I want to challenge our ideas about where art belongs. Dundee is a UNESCO City of design, and I’d like to challenge the divide between Fine and Applied arts, too - basically, this is an exhibition which breaks all the rules you never noticed were there!’. Morgan is the curator persona of Disabled Artist CL Gamble, who uses “method art” to retreat into their own little autistic world, leaving Morgan in charge out here with all these confusing humans”
Verdant Works (I would invite my friend Elly if we got that one, we could do multiple iterations?)
Wellgate Library Make Space (I would ask Erin Farley in that case)
Blend
Cake or Dice (Would be easy to lean into the autism play on words press release here too, a story of queer NDs supporting queer NDs)
Second Example Budget, 4 person show:
£350
Student Photographer, 2 hours £150
Art printing, travel, food: £100
Zine printing: £100 (easily get 50 copies with a nice cover, potentially 100 for that budget depending on number of pages)
DECOMPRESSION SESSION
I can host a that evening, next-day or next-week (as agreed) get together at my house to eat safe foods covered by the budget, talk about anything that went well/we’d change, anything we want off our chests etc.
I can also provide a sleep over in Dundee if that’s needed, if anyone would like that the night before/after to reduce travel and executive function spoons, as I’ll be taxiing to the venue.
Future ideas:
CAKE OR DICE or alternatively, Highlander Games
“PLAY NICE” Pandora solo show, needs allies!!
Austerity Board - 2024
Bridal Jenga
Snakes and Ladders spoon run (there aren’t any fucking ladders)
Neurotypical Pursuit
The UnGame (actual boardgame which is assisted communication for bonding!!)
Optional: Antichrist Operation (NSFW, no children) - you get to torture a garbage human being poppet of “who hurt u?” (after Marina Abramovic) This has risk assessment considerations the others don’t.
Budget: £150
Austerity: Printed. Updated / more chance cards? - £30 commemoriative “i survived austerity” badge?
Bridal Jenga: Extant. Needs more sides, bridal magazine £15 commemorative “i made my wife collapse” achievement badge? too dark?
Neurotypical Pursuit aka “Playing Games About Art is like Dancing About Literature”: Very basic hand made punk game board. Guess the correct meaning “between the lines” to collect 6 pie slice stickers for your commemorative scorecard. £15 scrap antics budget.
Badge Budget: Hire Coin Operated Press / Little Jupiter’s badge maker or ask at Wellgate Library. £10-30
Taxis £20 (Bank Mill to centre and back, Weds Afternoon has a support worker)
Venue Hire / Excess: £40
Ticketing possibility: As you are getting 3 badges, including one with stickers, tickets could be £5 each. Nobody Turned Away For Lack Of Funds - free tickets available. If it included a cake, we could maybe offer a £10 ticket, with a coffee so they get £5 after unit price of a latte or whatever as venue hire?
Advertise to Students in initial flush of freshers week, get more feet into Cake or Dice, etc.
